Palantir raises full-year outlook as US commercial revenue tops government

Palantir Technologies Inc. Lifted its financial guidance for the year after reporting that its domestic commercial division outgrew its historically dominant government business for the first time in the third quarter. The data analytics and artificial intelligence software company generated $2.31 billion in total revenue for the three months ended September 30, marking a 96% increase from the same period last year and crossing the $2 billion quarterly threshold for the first time.

The earnings report, released on Monday, beat consensus estimates of $2.18 billion according to LSEG estimates reported by CNBC. Adjusted earnings came in at 44 cents a share, topping the 41 cents expected by analysts. Net income more than doubled to $1.13 billion, or 44 cents a share, compared with $476 million a year earlier. Operating performance remained robust, backed by an adjusted operating margin of 62% and a Rule of 40 score of 158%.

Palantir's financial expansion stems from two main drivers mentioned in the filings: US commercial revenue surged 148% year over year to $984 million, edging past US government revenue, which climbed 96% to $953 million.

How did commercial sales overtake the Pentagon?

For years, Palantir relied heavily on public sector contracts, cementing a multiyear defense footprint through programs such as the Maven Smart System becoming an official Pentagon program. Yet the private sector has rapidly closed that gap. Domestic commercial revenue has more than quadrupled over the last two years, driven by widespread enterprise adoption of the company's artificial intelligence tools.

To support this expansion, Palantir closed 212 deals worth at least $1 million during the quarter. That tally includes 107 deals worth at least $5 million and 64 transactions valued at $10 million or more. Total contract value reached $2.92 billion, up 6% year over year. Within that figure, US commercial total contract value climbed 11% to $1.46 billion, while US commercial remaining deal value jumped 79% to $6.52 billion.

Chief executive Alex Karp asserted the company's unique market position during an interview with Seema Mody on CNBC, stating, I don’t believe anyone’s had consistent results like this in the history of software AI, ever.Alex Karp, Chief Executive and Co-Founder, via CNBC Karp added that the business is succeeding without salespeople.

That reading shows a company successfully pivoting from a defense contractor into an enterprise software powerhouse. By bypassing traditional sales teams while closing dozens of eight-figure contracts, Palantir has proved that corporate customers are willing to pay up for its infrastructure layer instead of settling for cheaper model tokens that yield what executives describe as AI slop.

What is behind the new financial outlook?

Buoyed by the third-quarter performance, Palantir raised its full-year 2026 revenue forecast to a range of $8.530 billion and $8.534 billion, pointing toward annual growth of roughly 91%. Wall Street had previously expected approximately $8.2 billion. The company also boosted its full-year US commercial revenue target to more than $3.559 billion, up from the $3.42 billion forecast three months ago.

Additional metrics reflect broader profitability across the board:

Adjusted operating income for the year is now expected between $5.245 billion and $5.249 billion, compared with a consensus estimate of $4.76 billion.

Adjusted free cash flow is projected to hit $4.8 billion to $5 billion, ahead of analyst expectations of $4.52 billion.

Fourth-quarter revenue is forecast at $2.649 billion to $2.653 billion, comfortably beating the $2.46 billion Wall Street consensus.

Adjusted operating income for the final quarter is projected between $1.64 billion and $1.644 billion.

Palantir ended September with $10.4 billion in cash and US Treasury securities. This cash reserve provides a substantial buffer against market volatility, which weighed on shares following the report.

Those numbers leave little doubt that management's financial targets are conservative relative to actual demand. The divergence between rising cash reserves and aggressive corporate deployment of AI tools suggests that enterprise spending on core data infrastructure is accelerating faster than external analysts anticipated.

Who are the winners and losers in the Sovereign AI divide?

Karp framed the broader software market around an expanding ideological and commercial gulf. Speaking in the company's earnings release, he noted, The Sovereign AI movement is imposing the most dramatic dichotomy between haves and have nots that I have witnessed in 30 years of business,Alex Karp, Chief Executive and Co-Founder, via Palantir Earnings Release
