Mississippi police expect more arrests in Tasia Fortune homicide case

Mississippi police have confirmed that Tasia Fortune’s death was a homicide, with authorities arresting one suspect and signaling more arrests could follow in the case of the 29-year-old Black woman found hanging from a tree last month. The investigation, which has drawn national attention, centers on the circumstances of Fortune’s death and the role of Jarques Ratliff, a 51-year-old man arrested on Friday after police encountered him on the street.

Arrest of Suspect Follows Homicide Determination

Police in Jackson, Mississippi, arrested Ratliff on a homicide charge following the state medical examiner’s determination that Fortune’s death was a homicide on Thursday, September 10. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney stated that the arrest was an “important development” but emphasized the case remains active, with “additional arrests pending as investigators follow the evidence.”

Fortune’s body was discovered on August 3 in the backyard of an abandoned home in Jackson, where she had been living at the time of her death. Her mother, Christy Spivey, expressed relief at the arrest but stressed that her daughter would not have taken her own life. “Absolutely not. Even if she could climb that tree, no, no, she would never, ever, ever,” Spivey said, citing Fortune’s deep faith and history of resilience.

The medical examiner’s classification of the death as a homicide allowed police to execute warrants they had already secured. However, Brackney declined to provide details about the nature of the death, the duration of Fortune’s presence at the location, or the relationship between Ratliff and the victim. “We owe it to Ms. Fortune, to her family, and the integrity of this investigation to let the evidence guide us,” Brackney said.

Fortune’s obituary, published in August by Tucker Funeral Home in Central City, Kentucky, described her as a mother, athlete, and woman of faith who faced significant challenges. She skipped her junior year of high school, was a star cross-country runner, and struggled with homelessness in recent years. The obituary highlighted her “powerful legacy of resilience,” noting that she “never stopped believing in her Savior” even during her darkest hours.

Spivey recounted how Fortune had recently expressed plans to start a cleaning business and rebuild her life. She also described the family’s history of facing racism and violence as a mixed-race couple in Crittenden County, Kentucky, before Fortune’s birth. Fortune was placed in foster care as a child and later ran away to Mississippi, where she lived for 10 years before her death.

Spivey emphasized that Fortune was the mother of four children but rarely saw two of them. The last time she saw her daughter was in late July, when a planned family reunion in Kentucky was canceled, though Fortune traveled to see her anyway. “When she was there, there was this pull, like a spiritual pull to her. I needed her. I guess God knew that was going to be it,” Spivey said.

Unanswered Questions and Ongoing Investigation

Ratliff, who has not appeared in Hinds County jail records, is expected to face charges in Jackson Municipal Court by Monday. His legal representation remains unclear, though if he is assigned a public defender, it would be the Hinds County office. Police have not disclosed whether DNA or other evidence led to his arrest, nor have they provided a motive for the killing.

The case has reignited discussions about racial violence in Mississippi, a state with a documented history of lynchings. The NAACP records at least 581 lynchings in Mississippi between 1882 and 1968. Spivey, however, focused on her daughter’s story, urging the public to “say her name. Keep it going” as she seeks answers.

The next critical step in the case will be Ratliff’s court appearance, which could provide further details about the charges and the investigation’s trajectory. For now, Fortune’s family and advocates continue to push for transparency, urging the public to remember her life beyond the circumstances of her death.
