The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Thursday that fast bowler Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan and the 2026 Asian Games due to a rectus femoris strain sustained during a match simulation on September 7. Rana, who had been recovering from a hamstring injury, was replaced by Yash Thakur, a 27-year-old pacer from Vidarbha, in both squads.

Rana’s latest setback occurred while he was undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. A BCCI media release stated that the fast bowler had been progressing well in his recovery but sustained the thigh muscle injury during a simulation session. This marks another injury-related challenge for Rana, who has faced recurring fitness issues this year, including a knee injury that sidelined him from the T20 World Cup 2026 and a subsequent hamstring strain during India’s England tour in July.

Thakur, who made his T20I debut during India’s Zimbabwe tour in July, has 50 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy appearances to his name, with 81 wickets at an economy rate of 7.04. His inclusion in the squad comes as a strategic move to bolster India’s pace attack, particularly after Bumrah’s fitness clearance and Rana’s absence.

Alongside Thakur’s call-up, the BCCI announced that Jasprit Bumrah has been declared fit for the Afghanistan T20I series after recovering from a left knee injury. Bumrah, India’s premier fast bowler, had been absent since the ODI tour of England in July. His return provides stability to India’s pace department, which has faced challenges due to Rana’s injury and other fitness concerns.

Other all-rounders, including Nitish Reddy and Washington Sundar, were also cleared for the assignments. The updated squad for the Afghanistan series includes Shreyas Iyer as captain, with Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan as wicketkeepers. The Asian Games squad, which will feature the same players, is set to begin its campaign on September 28.

Thakur’s inclusion in the squad is a notable opportunity to establish himself in India’s T20I setup. The pacer, who has played 22 IPL matches for Punjab Kings, took 27 wickets.
