At least 30 Dead After Two High-Speed Trains Collide in Spain

At least 30 people were killed and numerous others injured on Wednesday when a high-speed train slammed into the rear of a stationary train in central Spain, derailing two carriages. The disaster occurred Wednesday morning between the towns of Urda and Orgaz in the province of Toledo, along the rail corridor connecting Madrid with Seville and Andalusia. Esther Padilla, spokeswoman for the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha, told the state broadcaster TVE that the death toll had climbed to 30. Spain's rail system operator ADIF suspended high-speed rail service between Madrid, Ciudad Real, and Andalusia. Padilla told state broadcaster TVE that the accident was between two high-speed trains heading in the same direction from Madrid to Seville and that one ran into the tail of the other while it was stopped, knocking two of its cars off the track.

The collision involved two high-speed trains heading in the same direction from Madrid. According to regional authorities, a train from Spain's state-owned RENFE company rammed into the tail of a private rail company IRYO service that had stopped on the line. The impact knocked two of its cars off the track. Footage broadcast by regional channel CMM TV showed a derailed train with at least one carriage remaining on an elevated section of track, and twisted metal, broken panels, and wreckage strewn across an embankment beneath the line. Padilla stated that 397 passengers were in the RENFE train, while 147 passengers were in the IRYO train.

Rescue Operations and Immediate Response

Emergency response teams rushed to the site in Toledo province. Firefighters from surrounding towns were deployed alongside three medical helicopters and two mobile intensive care units. Madrid’s mayor, Jose Luis Martínez-Almeida, said on X that the capital was also sending emergency medical teams and firefighters to assist with rescue efforts. The Civil Guard sent a specialist disaster investigation team to the site. Meanwhile, Manuel Galán, the mayor of nearby Urda, told TVE that civil protection authorities asked his town hall to prepare a sports pavilion to attend to passengers. Regional President Emiliano García-Page wrote on X that he was on his way to the crash site.

We heard a massive roar, a truly enormous thud that went on for 10 seconds, as if the train were about to derail. Through the right-hand window, we could see a wrecked train – I imagine it must have been the other one.

The human toll and disruption rippled outward immediately. Spain's main political parties suspended their planned activities for the day. Government sources told El País the crash could be worse than the Adamuz rail disaster in January in which 46 people were killed. That earlier tragedy, which also involved trains from those two companies, saw 45 people die in southern Spain when a train jumped the track and hit an oncoming train, making it the deadliest in Spain since a 2013 crash that killed 80 people and shaking the confidence the European country has in its extensive high-speed rail network. International fallout also began to register as Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on X that Italy’s consulate in Madrid was checking whether any Italian nationals were among those affected by the collision and was ready to provide assistance.

Unanswered Questions and Official Fallout

While rescue and recovery operations remained ongoing, critical details concerning the disaster remained unverified. Padilla said that the cause of the crash was not known. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his shock on X, stating that he remained in constant contact with the transport minister, and with the president of Castilla-La Mancha. Opposition People’s party leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo said on X that he was very concerned about the information getting about a new rail accident, emphasizing that the priority now is to attend to the victims and support their families.

A development is published once several independent outlets carry it, early numbers are attributed to whoever reported them rather than stated as fact, and a developing story is updated in one report as facts firm up instead of being split across duplicate articles.
