Will O'Rourke ruled out of India series with hamstring and calf injuries

New Zealand strike bowler Will O'Rourke has been ruled out of the home series against India and will target a return to face Australia, New Zealand Cricket announced on Saturday.

O'Rourke is recovering from hamstring and calf muscle injuries and will not play in the home ODI and Test matches against India as a "precaution", a statement from the national body said. New Zealand coach Rob Walter hoped his key new ball bowler would be cleared to play in the four-Test series in Australia starting in early December.

Convalescence and a Cautious Timeline Toward Australia

O'Rourke was previously sidelined for seven months with a back stress fracture before returning to the field earlier this year. He returned during New Zealand's tour of Bangladesh in April, playing all three ODIs. The fast bowler then featured in all three Tests against England, taking 10 wickets during New Zealand's 2-1 series victory.

However, his progress stalled when he tore his hamstring on the final day of the third Test in Nottingham. He subsequently suffered a calf injury at a training session in August, and he has not played competitive cricket since the England tour.

Walter outlined a target path for the bowler's comeback, pointing toward domestic fixtures and a high-stakes series across the Tasman Sea. Ideally he'll be able to return for Canterbury in the Plunket Shield in late December, and in a perfect world he’ll be ready to go for the opening Test against Australia in Perth on December 9, Walter said. The 25-year-old has impressed in 14 Tests since his 2024 debut, taking 49 wickets at an average just under 25. During the Black Caps' 3-0 Test series sweep in India in 2024, O'Rourke claimed seven wickets in three matches at an average of 18.42.

Squad Shuffles and a Heavy Injury Toll Before India's Arrival

New Zealand have been hit by injuries in the lead-up to India's visit which comprises five Twenty20 Internationals starting on October 22, five ODIs and two Tests. The ODI series will be played from November 4 to 15, while the Test matches are scheduled to take place in Wellington from November 19 to 23 and Christchurch from November 27 to December 1.

All-rounder Rachin Ravindra has already been ruled out of the T20I series after dislocating his shoulder during a commercial shoot. Batsman Mark Chapman and Zak Foulkes were both ruled out of the T20 squad on Saturday. New Zealand Cricket have named all-rounder Josh Clarkson and fast bowler Blair Tickner as replacements.

Selection Decisions Await as New Zealand Plots Survival

New Zealand are scheduled to announce their squad for the India series on Sunday. Walter acknowledged the emotional weight of the omission for the young fast bowler. It's obviously disappointing for Will to have to miss such a marquee tour at home against India, Walter said.

We all agreed it was best for him to take some more time to rehabilitate both injuries and safely build up his bowling loads.

Our pace bowling resources will be critical over the next few months so we're taking a conservative approach to Will's return to ensure he's fully fit before he takes the field again.
