Sacha Baron Cohen to star in Quentin Tarantino’s West End play The Popin…

More than 16,000 tickets are priced at under £50 for the theatrical debut of Quentin Tarantino, whose pivot to the London stage pairs him with film star Sacha Baron Cohen in The Popinjay Cavalier. The production arrives as the American director tackles his first work written for the theater, setting the premiere for March 18, 2027, at the Phoenix Theatre in London's West End.

Tickets for the run start at £25, with priority access sales opening at 9am BST on Monday before a public sale at 12pm. Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions are producing the play, marking a high-profile cross-pollination between Hollywood studio infrastructure and commercial West End theater management.

From Hollywood Violences to West End Swashbuckling

The production brings together two distinct figures from modern cinema and comedy. Tarantino, 63, is best known for violent film classics including Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill Volume 1 and Volume 2, Death Proof, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Baron Cohen, 54, has built an international career on self-created comic characters such as Ali G, Borat Sagdiyev, and Brüno Gehard, though he has not yet had a leading role in a major stage production and trained with the French clown guru Philippe Gaulier.

Set in 1830s Europe, The Popinjay Cavalier has been billed as a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen. The project draws specific inspiration from the classic swashbuckler genre of old Hollywood, including the writings of George Bruce, Ernst Vajda, and Jesse Lasky Jr. A popinjay is defined as a vain, foppish or conceited person, while a cavalier is a cavalryman or courteous gentleman.

Tom Rothman, the chairman and chief executive of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, and Friedman said: It is a joy and an honour to be developing this play with Quentin – and obviously quite an adventure. How lucky we are that one of the great storytellers of our time has chosen to make his theatrical debut. They added that watching the director in a rehearsal room is extraordinary, noting his infectious delight in working with actors, fencers, acrobats, musicians, and the creative team.

Quentin called, I said yes before he even got to say his first ‘motherfucker’. When the best director in the world calls, you don’t ask questions. I am beyond delighted that we will be losing our West End virginity together. I have made him promise not to be gentle.

Sacha Baron Cohen

Tarantino stated that he was keen with anticipation to give the West End a great night out. The director first revealed his plans to stage a play in 2025 on the Church of Tarantino podcast, stating that the script was all written and would take up a year and a half to two years of his life if successful. I’m preparing for it to be a success. If it’s a flop, I’ll be done very quickly, he said on the podcast. The filmmaker, who lives in Tel Aviv with his Israeli wife, Daniella Pick, and their two children, told the podcast last year that he would more than likely move to England and bring his family with him while working on the play.

Production Scale and Career Milestones

The scale of the collaboration reflects the distinct career trajectories of both men. Tarantino has repeatedly spoken about plans to retire from filmmaking after making 10 films. He counts Kill Bill Volumes One and Two together, bringing his total feature film count to nine so far. He has won two Oscars, for the screenplays of Pulp Fiction and Django Unchained.
